‘Talent of the century’; that’s some praise. Yet, Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, is certainly special.
Leon Goretzka appears to have overtaken Max Meyer as the apple of Schalke’s eye and the crown jewel of their renowned academy. In his fourth full season with the Gelsenkirchen giants, the commanding midfielder is improving by the week while his subtle, velvet-soled team-mate appears stuck in a rut.
Therefore, despite the fact that Goretzka’s Schalke contract is due to expire in the summer of 2018, interested suitors Tottenham Hotspur and Everton would still have to pay big to bring him to the Premier League. Calciomercato report that a bid of £25 million, however, may do the trick.
And if fans of the big spending duo were wondering just why Goretzka is rated so highly, gushing praise from Schalke boss Markus Weinzierl should go some way to providing an explanation.
Though this is nothing compared to the view of his manager at former club VFL Bochum. Schalke were willing to pay £3.5 million for the 18-year-old after just one senior campaign in the German second division though, according to then-Bochum boss Peter Neururer, he would soon be worth far more.
The experienced manager, claimed he had “never seen an 18-year-old, who has even nearly his potential”, while going as far as to call him the ‘talent of the century’ as reported by Welt.
And though injuries may have slowed Goretzka’s progress, it appears that he is Germany’s next great wunderkind. Under Mauricio Pochettino or Ronald Koeman, renowned nurturers of young talent, Neururer’s predicition may not prove to be too wide of the mark.
