West Ham fans react as Slaven Bilic hints at Jonathan Calleri's future

It's fair to say Jonathan Calleri has struggled to settle in the Premier League with just one West Ham goal to his name.

West Ham United's Jonathan Calleri shoots wide

The fact that West Ham United have signed a mammoth 32 strikers in the seven years since Davids Gold and Sullivan took over doesn’t exactly reflect well on the club’s recruitment policy.

Neither does the fact that they have mustered a combined average of a goal every six games, as reported by The Guardian.

Though at least that’s superior to Jonathan Calleri’s record. In eleven appearances since signing for West Ham in the summer, the once prodigious Argentine has managed just one Premier League goal.

Granted each of his outings have come from the substitute’s bench but the fact is that the 23-year-old’s propensity for a glaring miss hasn’t done him any favours in a season undermined by the club’s quite horrific recruitment.

Consequently, it was no surprise when The Sun claimed in January that West Ham were considering cancelling his loan deal from Deportivo Maldonado just halfway through the season.

Though, after three more difficult months in the capital, few were expecting Hammers boss Slaven Bilic to hint that Calleri may instead stay at the club on a permanent basis.

"We're going to see. All I can say is he's a very good professional," Bilic said in quotes reported by talkSPORT. "He's not a regular but he's never dropped one per cent of energy in training, it's great to have him around.

"He deserves his chance and he played really well when he came on against Swansea."

If it took Carlos Tevez a season to settle in England, who is to begrudge Calleri a rather slow adaptation to the Premier League? There’s a reason he was once courted by the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus though the reaction of West Ham fans suggests that Calleri has much to do to prove he’s worth the wait.
