At the age of just 21, Oghenekaro Etebo already appears to be carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. The Super Eagles have frequently flattered to deceive on the world stage despite possessing an array of talented players, though Etebo could go above and beyond the likes of John Obi Mikel.
Likened to Paul Pogba for his ability to drive forward from midfield with tremendous pace and power, it was no surprise to those in the know when The Sun claimed that Arsenal, as well as Monaco and Atalanta, were tracking his progress.
Crowned African Football’s Most Promising Talent in 2015 and becoming the first player in 44 years to net four goals in an Olympic fixture in Rio, Etebo has potential by the bucketload. And Arsenal, renowned for spotting young talents and developing them into world stars, would surely be a tempting destination.
Therefore, West Brom should not wait around if they harbour hopes of pulling off a dramatic transfer coup. According to All Nigeria Soccer, The Baggies sent scouts to watch Etebo in action in a recent friendly with Senegal.
And Sport Witness report that West Brom representatives have also been spotted at Portuguese side Feirense this season – where Etebo currently plies his trade. Though surely not for much longer.
The lung-busting midfielder is clearly on the road to bigger and better things. And West Brom, who have earned a place in the top half of the Premier League due to their power and physicality, could benefit from signing a player with Etebo’s striking natural attributes.
He’d certainly come cheaper than William Carvalho. The Portuguese Euro 2016 champion is reportedly on West Brom’s radar and could be sold by Sporting Lisbon for £30 million this summer, as reported by A Bola.
And despite Carvalho’s composure and superb distribution, Etebo’s ability to turn defence into attack could make him the ideal fit for Tony Pulis’ pragmatic West Brom.
