The 21-year-old Uruguayan, an impressive all-rounder strong both in and out of possession, has been a regular in the blucherchiati midfield this season, his performances raising expectations that a maiden international call-up could be just around the corner.
And while Torreira’s agent, Pablo Bentacur, has played down the prospect of signing a new contract, he has hinted that the defensive midfielder’s future could rest upon the where esteemed sporting director Monchi decides to continue his career.
“A renewal? It’s not the time,” Bentacur told Tuttomercatoweb. “Now he has to stay focused on the present and Sampdoria.
“It’s true that Monchi wanted him at Sevilla, and it would be a pleasure to talk about a possible transfer to Roma.”
Ironically, however, Sky Sports claimed earlier in the season that Everton wanted to lure Sevilla’s sporting director to Goodison Park after he laid the foundations for the greatest spell in the La Liga giants’ history.
Renowned for his ability to spot a talent and sell them on for huge profits, the likes of Kevin Gameiro, Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic and Carlos Bacca all passed through Sevilla’s doors during Monchi’s time at the helm, helping the club win five Europa League and UEFA Cup crowns.
However, Monchi revealed at the weekend that he would finally be ending his long association with the La Liga giants and has been heavily tipped to move to Serie A with Roma.
Therefore, it’s tempting to wonder whether Everton would be in the box seat for Torreira’s signature had Monchi moved to Goodison Park.
