Everton could have appointed Monchi last summer, suggests Guillem Balague.

Well-known Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has revealed on Skysports.com that Everton did not pay Monchi’s buy-out clause last summer.

Back in June 2016, The Liverpool Echo reported that Sevilla wanted to appoint Monchi as their director of football.

It was also reported that French giants Paris Saint-Germain wanted the Sevilla sporting director.

Balague has revealed that Everton refused to pay Monchi’s buy-out clause last summer.

“After 17 years, Monchi has decided to go,” Balague wrote on Skysports.com in response to a question whether Monchi would be joining Real Madrid.

“He could have ended up at Everton last summer but the English club did not want to pay his buy out clause.

"Madrid thought about it, but he recently traveled to London to agree a three-year deal with Roma. Anything else would be a massive surprise.”

Monchi is one of the best in his role in the world, and his success at finding the right players at the right price at Sevilla cannot be overstated.

Everton would have been wise to pay the Spaniard’s buy-out clause last summer.

The Toffees have done well in the recent transfer windows, but in the long term Monchi would have been a stunning appointment who could have taken to a whole new level.

Just look at Sevilla, who were in the La Liga title race until a few weeks ago…
