He looks decent, that Florian Thauvin kid. And we’re not just talking about his Tux. On the face of it, there’s nothing untoward about Mundo Deportivo linking a beautifully balanced, technically gifted French winger with a wand of a left foot to Barcelona.
Yet, the fact that Florian Thauvin flopped so spectacularly at Newcastle United means the prospect of him fighting Neymar and Andres Iniesta, let alone Denis Suarez and Arda Turan, for a place in the Barca squad appears rather more far-fetched.
Arriving at St James’ Park as an apparent upgrade on fellow Ligue 1 flop Remy Cabella, Thauvin ironically now shares a dressing room with his Newcastle predecessor on loan at Marseille.
And, even more remarkably, the £15 million winger is still contracted to the North East club although he is set to sign a permanent deal at the Stade Velodrome at the end of the season, The Mirror reports.
It must be pointed out that Thauvin this season has offered glimpses of the sublime skill that drew Newcastle to him in the first place. Cutting inside onto that left foot with Robben-esque precision, the 24-year-old has scored 10 Ligue 1 goals this season and was recently rewarded with a maiden call-up to the French international side.
However, he still has a long way to go before he can legitimately claim to be worthy of the Blaugrana.
Extremely unlikely at best, but it would be quite something if that rumour of Thauvin going from flopping at #nufc to Barcelona happened— Charles Crook (@chlcrk) March 27, 2017
Thauvin link to Barca is one of the daftest things I've ever read. Done well at Marseille, but too temperamental for his own good. #nufc— Andrew McVittie (@Andrew_McVittie) March 27, 2017
@NUFCThreatLevel is this the same Barcelona who signed Ginola and HBA? Clearly got form— Jonnie (@Jonfromspenny) March 27, 2017
