Forget Martyn Waghorn, Leeds should target Matt Smith as backup striker

Leeds United would be smart to consider a move for the QPR player rather than the Glasgow Rangers man.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Leeds United are interested in signing Martyn Waghorn from Rangers this summer to offer an alternative to current first-choice striker Chris Wood.

However, one HITC Sport reader has suggested a far better alternative in the form of Matt Smith.

Given the way Leeds play under Garry Monk, the current Queens Park Rangers striker would be a much better option for the Whites than Waghorn, whose record outside of Scotland is not exactly inspiring.

Waghorn and Smith are both 27 but the latter’s game is far more similar to that of Wood and he would surely relish the chance to return to Elland Road and complete his unfinished business.

Smith was sold far too soon and the majority of Leeds fans would love to have him back.

He may have a long-term contract at QPR but with the right bid Leeds could get a player who would be a far better option than Waghorn.

Only time will tell what Monk has planned and much will depend on which league Leeds are in next season, but a move for Smith would be a punt well worth taking.
