West Ham United are the current favourites to land the 24-year-old, but could Newcastle United tempt him to Tyneside instead?
Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson applauds the club’s fans
Bookmakers Bet Victor have listed Newcastle United among the top candidates to sign Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson this summer.
Despite being second from bottom of the Premier League, no club outside the top seven has conceded fewer goals than Middlesbrough this season, and the form of Gibson has been a key factor in the Teessiders’ defensive success.
It is therefore only natural that a number of rival top-flight clubs have been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old – nephew of Boro chairman, Steve – with Chelsea and Manchester City perhaps the most notable.
However, with odds of 8/1, the presence of Newcastle on Bet Victor’s list of potential Gibson destinations is certainly intriguing.
West Ham, who have also been linked, are the 4/1 front-runners to sign the Boro native, whose employers valued him at £35 million earlier this season (Mirror).
Were the Teessiders to make an immediate return to the Championship, however, their asking price is sure to drop, and Newcastle could plausibly take advantage should they replace their local rivals in next season’s Premier League.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark have formed an impressive partnership at the heart of Rafa Benitez’s side’s defence, though improvements could still be sought by the Magpies especially if either of Grant Hanley or Chancel Mbemba leave.
Could Newcastle United make a move for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson this summer?
