With their return to the Premier League looking likelier and likelier, HITC Sport has been taking a look at some of the best ever Newcastle United comebacks.
A club who epitomise the highs and lows of football, Newcastle United have enjoyed some absolutely fantastic results over the years. Shocking football supporters across the country on more than one occasion. Here’s a look at our top three contenders for the title of Newcastle United’s best ever comebacks.
1. Newcastle United 4-4 Arsenal (February 5th, 2011)
Cheick Tiote celebrates his last-minute equaliser against Arsenal
After just 26 minutes, Newcastle United found themselves 0-4 down against Arsenal at home, and fans were already getting ready to leave St James Park after what was looking like another miserable day. However, after an Abou Diaby red card for tussling with Newcastle United’s Joey Barton, The Magpies started to pull things back. The first goal was scored by Barton, before Leon Best made it 2-4, followed by another Barton effort to make it 3-4. And then, the goal that will live long in the memory…A Joey Barton free-kick is cleared by the Arsenal defence, only to find the boot of Ivorian midfielder Cheick Tiote to volley home from 30 yards.
2. Leeds United 3-4 Newcastle United (December 22, 2001)
Newcastle United’s Craig Bellamy celebrates
After 56 minutes, Newcastle United were already 3-1 to Leeds United, with the two Premier League sides battling out for a high finish. Alan Shearer, Rob Elliott and Nolberto Solano came to the rescue however, adding to Craig Bellamy’s first goal, to send manager Sir Bobby Robson dancing down the sidelines!
3. Newcastle United 4-3 Norwich City (September 28th, 2016)
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez and Norwich City manager Alex Neil (R)
Newcastle United’s chances at promotion looked to be in trouble as they trailed rivals Norwich City 3-1 at home earlier this season. Despite controlling much of the game from the get-go, Rafa Benitez’s men only had Dwight Gayle’s opener to show for their efforts. Norwich levelled just before the break from the penalty spot, before Cameron Jerome and then Jacob Murphy, stunned St James’ Park into silence.
However, with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle leading the line, Newcastle United were by no means down and out, with the latter sparking a comeback with another goal. Yoan Gouffran headed United level in injury time before that man Dwight Gayle kept his nerve to fire the winner through a crowded penalty box.
