The former Middlesbrough striker recently scored his first goal for Derby County in their 2-1 win against Barnsley.
About as close to a Championship veteran as you could get, David Nugent has been around the block. Scoring goals for teams such as Preston North End, Portsmouth, Leicester City and Middlesbrough, the goalscorer now finds himself under Steve McClaren at Derby County.
Signed to help aide a potential promotion push, David Nugent’s life at Pride Park got off to a tricky start, after picking up an injury after his first appearance. However, the striker is now fighting fit, and recently scored his first goal for the club: a winner against Barnsley.
Derby County’s form hasn’t picked up in the same way Nugent’s has, however. Now fallen to tenth, the Rams are virtually out of the promotion race; a bitterly disappointing end to a season that had begun to show promise.
Speaking to The Football League Paper recently, Derby striker David Nugent highlighted what is was he thought the side needs to launch a successful promotion push:
“We’ve got to find that fine balance as players…We’re the ones who cross the line and put the performance in. The manager can only say what he says in the changing room and it’s up to the players to go out and do it on the pitch.
“We’ve got the players. We’ve just got to believe that we’re good enough to get promoted.
“Obviously, Derby were in the play-off final in 2014, but the two years after that they seemed to start the season well and then lose the edge come the end of the campaign.
“We’ve got to try to get that winning mentality all the way through the season, stay confident, have a good team spirit.
“I’m sure, once we all believe in ourselves and our abilities, we will be up there.”
