Chris Wood moved to the top of the Championship goalscoring charts with two well-taken goals for Leeds United at Birmingham City on Friday night.

The New Zealand international broke free to lift the ball over the Blues goalkeeper and into the net for his 21st league goal of the campaign.

That figure drew him level with Newcastle United star Dwight Gayle at the top of the second-tier scoring charts.

He later scored a second in the second half, to move one goal clear of Gayle and reach the 25-goal mark in all competitions for the Whites, in what is far and away the most successful individual season of his career.

His first goal of the night drew admiring glances from fans, pundits and players alike on Twitter.

Stoke City star Saido Berahino and Leeds-supporting triathlete world champions Jonny Brownlee took to the social media site to air their views.

Meanwhile, former Leeds striker and current BBC pundit Noel Whelan hailed Wood’s composure in the finish.

He told BBC Radio West Yorkshire Sport: “That was a top-class finish from Wood, to control and guide it over the keeper with the weight of the pass and the dampness of the surface… One moment of brilliance has given Leeds the lead…”

Leeds dominated the first half at St. Andrew’s, but only led by a single goal going into the interval.

They were pegged back just after the hour mark through Craig Gardner’s strike, but Wood then struck to net his 25th of the season soon after to restore the lead.

Substitute Alfonso Pedraza drove home a third with 10 minutes remaining to seal the 3-1 victory.
