Tottenham have brought back Steve Hitchen as chief scout.

Mauricio Pochettino confirmed this week that Steve Hitchen has returned to Tottenham Hotspur as chief scout, The Sun reported.

Hitchen worked at Spurs until 2010, earning a glowing reputation which saw Damien Comolli poach him at Liverpool, before spells at QPR and most recently Derby.

He was credited with finding Luka Modric during his first spell at White Hart Lane, and will work under a head of recruitment yet to be appointed amid Paul Mitchell's exit.

Hitchen was an individual Spurs were reluctant to lose, especially manager at the time Harry Redknapp.

Redknapp told The Telegraph: "We have just lost our French scout, who is excellent.

“He’s just gone to Liverpool, so he’s nicked him off us a bit lively. It’s a boy called Steve Hitchen and he was really good, an English boy who lived in France.

“He’s gone to Liverpool. But he was very, very good and we liked him a lot. He would have been our main scout abroad.”

Seven years later, Tottenham have got him back, and expertise in the French market could be valuable after a poor success rate buying from across the channel in recent years.

In the Pochettino era Spurs have invested in Benjamin Stambouli, Clinton N'Jie and Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, one of who has been sold, one is out on loan, and the latter yet to make an impact.
