How do Newcastle fans reflect on Cheick Tiote’s six-and-a-half years on Tyneside?

Over the years, Newcastle United fans have been subjected to a lot of signings. Some good, some bad, some ugly. Some really ugly. And quite where Ivorian midfielder Cheick Tiote sits amongst this group is hard to tell.

After joining the club from Dutch side FC Twente in 2010, Cheick Tiote quickly became a popular figure at St James Park, known for his tough tackles, tireless work ethic and a wonder goal against Arsenal.

But after seemingly seeking a move away from the club, Tiote’s form dipped considerably, and now the Ivorian is nowhere near getting into Rafa Benitez’s side.

And yet window after window the midfielder remains on the books of the famous North East club – that late leveller against the Gunners a distant memory.

So what’s next for the Ivorian? Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Has his time at Newcastle United been a total failure? HITC Sport asks Newcastle United fans…

“I think he’s been a good pro when he’s been playing” said one Newcastle United fan, who’d rather remember the good times. Another fan added “he started off well when he was partnered with Yohan Cabaye, and then when Cabaye left I think he thought he was [the new] Cabaye…and he isn’t.”

“His first couple of years were good, but he started dipping off” added another, whereas another Newcastle United fan thought “he lost a lot of games for us [Newcastle] due to suspension.”

Clearly Newcastle United fans have good memories of the Ivorian, but it looks like his time is up.
