Could former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, who is now in charge of Newcastle United, take charge of Manchester United in the future?

Rafael Benitez may be managing Newcastle United in the Championship at the moment, but there can be no denial that he is one of the best football managers in the world. Benitez has been in charge of some of the biggest clubs in the world, such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The Spaniard was also in charge of Liverpool from 2004 until 2010 and is still hugely popular among the Merseyside club’s fans. During his time at Anfield, Benitez won the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006.

Liverpool and Manchester United are fierce rivals, and it is hard to envisage Benitez ever taking charge of the Old Trafford outfit. True, the former Valencia head coach managed Chelsea, but United?

Well-known sports presenter Richard Keys, though, believes that Benitez would become the United manager if the price is right, claiming that he manages only for himself.

“Regulars know that Rafa the Gafa isn’t my favourite,” Keys wrote on his website. “I’ve said many times that I believe he only manages for himself – for his own cv.

“Proof had to be the time he took on the Chelsea job (as revealed by yours truly and denied even by his closest confidantes!) after everything he’d previously said about the club and its fans.

“He’d take over at United if the price was right. I’ve argued often about the out-dated concept of ‘loyalty’, but some things you don’t do.”

Keys may be right, but as things stand, Benitez is staying at Newcastle, who are one of the top favourites to get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

United are also going strong under manager Jose Mourinho. The Red Devils are unlikely to win the Premier League title this season, but they could end up in the Champions League places.
