Ian Taylor has commented on Aston Villa’s performance against Nottingham Forest.
Aston Villa lost again on Saturday evening, as Nottingham Forest came from behind to win 2-1 at the City Ground.
Villa had picked up just two points in five games heading into their clash with Forest, but took the lead when Jonathan Kodjia curled home a superb goal from the edge of the box.
Aston Villa’s James Chester looks dejected
Moments before half time, Britt Assombalonga bundled in an equaliser from close range after Sam Johnstone had failed to smother Jamie Ward’s long-range strike, and Jack Grealish’s 78th minute red card for two bookable offences left Villa scrapping for a point.
They didn’t even get that in the end though, as deep into added time, teenage striker Ben Brereton smashed home to beat Johnstone at his near post and hand Forest all three points.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce
With no win in six league games, Villa are enduring a miserable 2017, and even fielding new signings Johnstone, James Bree, Birkir Bjarnason, Conor Hourihane, Henri Lansbury and Scott Hogan couldn’t grab Steve Bruce a win.
Any lingering hopes of a play-off push are all but dead now, and former Villa hero Ian Taylor took to Twitter after the final whistle to offer his verdict on the performance.
Taylor felt that Villa had better chances to win the game than Forest, but two errors – most probably aimed at goalkeeper Johnstone – cost them the game.
Taylor added that Villa must start to keep clean sheets, as whilst they will score goals with the likes of Kodjia and Hogan in the side, they need to stop conceding so many – and explained that Neil Taylor’s illness saw Bjarnason in a left wing back role rather than Jordan Amavi.
