Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers signed Emerson Hyndman on loan from Bournemouth in the January transfer window.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has explained to The Daily Echo why he allowed Emerson Hyndman to join Rangers in the January transfer window.

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers signed Hyndman on loan from Premier League club Bournemouth until the end of the season.

Howe has explained why he decided to send the 20-year-old central midfielder to Ibrox. The Bournemouth manager has also predicted the USA international to return to the Vitality Stadium as a better player.

“Emerson has huge potential to be a very good player for us over a number of years,” Howe told The Daily Echo. “To get to that point we felt he needed to play games.

“The reason behind the Rangers move was twofold. The size of the club and the experience he will gain up there, in terms of the pressure environment and the amount of people watching him, we felt would be really good for him.

“We also felt working with Mark Warburton would do him the world of good. I’ve got a lot of time for Mark since his work at Brentford and how he coaches.”

Prior to his move to Rangers on loan in the January transfer window, Hyndman failed to make a single appearance in the Premier League for Bournemouth this season.

The youngster, who featured in three competitive games for the Cherries this campaign, has already played twice in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers.

The American midfielder’s latest performance came against Heart of Midlothian away from home in the league on Wednesday evening.

Hyndman scored for the Gers at the Tynecastle Stadium in their 4-1 defeat to Hearts. The 20-year-old started the match and played for 61 minutes.

Former Rangers star Derek Johnstone has criticised manager Mark Warburton for making the substitution.

“Rangers are Emerson’s employers until the end of the season, they are picking up his wages and his only focus right now is Rangers,” Johnstone wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times. “I was disappointed to see him replaced. I think he is a real prospect and he was having a good game.

“But if there is that agreement there and Mark feels he is protecting the player then that is what he has got to do. For Rangers, that is not good. If you have got that blue shirt on, you have to give your all. If you are playing well, you don’t expect to go off.”
