After their humiliating defeat to Hearts, Rangers fans are currently split over the future of their manager.

It was another disappointing night for Rangers fans on Wednesday, as the Gers suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Heart of Midlothian. Rangers, whose form away from Ibrox has been suspect this season, are now 25 points off the top spot, with arch-rivals Celtic seemingly running away with the league.

Rangers fans have been steadily losing patience with Gers manager, Mark Warburton, who guided his side back to the top flight at the end of last season, and this latest defeat is sure to pile the pressure on the former Brentford boss. But is this fair?

Considering this season is their first back in the top flight, finishing second, as Rangers look set to do, surely isn’t such a bad start? The ethos of Rangers is, of course, to be the best, and to be fighting for the top spot all the way to the gritty end, but after years out of the top flight, Ibrox needs to rebuild.

As Warburton has stated numerous times, but most recently in a Q&A with the Scottish Sun, the aim for this season was to cement Rangers back in the top flight, and secure a place in Europe. Warburton also added:

“My focus is on Rangers, and getting us in to Europe this year. If we finish second and get in to Europe the year after being promoted, I’d defy anyone who said that was a bad season.

“I’ll ask a question. When was the previous time Rangers had been down to the bottom division?

“But we’ve never been to the lowest level before and had to fight our way back.

“The club is coming back from a very, very low ebb, a very, very tough time. To come back and get promotion was last year’s target and we achieved it.

“What I’d like you guys to say is, ‘there is a big gap alright, but finishing second and getting in to Europe is not a bad achievement’.”

Warburton’s focus is clearly set on a slow build, implementing first a structure of stability in Scotland’s top flight, as well as bringing through promising young players, taught and complemented by a number of older, experienced players to teach them, such as Clint Hill.

Is this such a bad system for Rangers? Do the Ibrox faithful agree? Or have Rangers fans had enough of second place?
