The Dane has failed to fire at Nottingham Forest and faces a challenge to force his way into Gary Brazil’s plans.

Nicklas Bendtner wants to stay and fight for his place at Nottingham Forest, Ekstra Bladet reports, despite interest from China and Russia.

It can be argued that the nomadic Dane was fortunate to even be given an opportunity by Forest after he was frozen out by Wolfsburg for disciplinary issues, not the first time he has departed a club under a cloud.

And a return to English football, where he represented Arsenal with mixed results interspersed with spells at Birmingham City and Sunderland, appeared destined to be either a roaring success or yet another disappointment in a career of false dawns.

Two goals in 14 Championship games point, rather inevitably, to the latter. And then there is the small matter of an own goal to set arch rivals Derby County on their way to a 3-0 win in the East Midlands derby.

Furthermore, the deadline day signings of Aston Villa misfit Ross McCormack and talented Bolton youngster Zach Clough look certain to push Bendtner further down the pecking order although, according to Ekstra Bladet, he has no interest in pursuing an exit from the City Ground.

Could Nottingham Forest signing spell the end for under-fire player?

The publication reports that opulent clubs in Russia and China are hoping to take advantage of his difficulties in the East Midlands but Bendtner is determined to work his way back into caretaker manager Gary Brazil’s plans.

While the 29-year-old should be commended for his unwillingness to chase the big bucks in a minor league elsewhere, the fact he has been reduced to a substitute’s role in each of the two games after Philippe Montanier’s departure does not bode well.

Much-maligned flop could regret wasting Aston Villa chance

Perhaps another fresh start is the better option.
