Newcastle United have missed out on Modou Barrow to Leeds United.

Leeds United won the race to sign Modou Barrow last night, announcing on their official website that the Gambian has joined until the end of the season on loan.

Barrow was one of two signings Leeds made on transfer deadline day, following the acquisition of Alfonso Pedraza.

Barrow had entered the day expected to sign for Newcastle United, with the Swansea City winger considered an alternative to Andros Townsend.

As it was, Newcastle ended up with neither, with the club unable to agree a fee with Crystal Palace for Andros Townsend, The Chronicle reported.

While that deal involved a potential £13 million deal, Barrow was a free option, with the winger available on loan.

The Mirror had reported that Newcastle were in talks to sign Barrow days earlier, yet conspired to let him slip from their grasp, with his former Swansea boss Garry Monk acting late on deadline day to secure his signature for Leeds.

Barrow failed to score during two short term loans in the Championship at Nottingham Forest and Blackburn and it remains to be seen if he will be a success at Leeds, but they have taken a low risk non committal gamble.

Newcastle did not sign a single player in January, and despite sitting seemingly comfortably in the automatic promotion places, Leeds are one of the teams chasing them, and fans are concerned that failing to sign the 24-year-old could prove to be a mistake...
