Leeds United lost 1-0 at Sutton United in Sunday’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie.
Leeds United were embarrassingly dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round of the competition after a 1-0 defeat away at non-league Sutton United on Sunday afternoon.
After seeing off League Two side Cambridge United in the previous round, Leeds were handed a trip to South London to take on National League side Sutton United, who beat AFC Wimbledon in a replay earlier this month.
Sutton United’s Maxime Biamou is fouled by Leeds’ Lewie Coyle resulting in a penalty
Leeds were expected to coast past their opponents, much like they did when the sides met in the FA Cup back in 1970, when Leeds won 6-0 – but this game was much, much different.
Leeds never really got going at Gander Green Lane, with Garry Monk’s rotated side struggling to capture their best form on Sutton’s 3G pitch, and the worst case scenario arrived in the second half.
Sutton United’s Jamie Collins celebrates scoring with team mates
After a mix-up between Lewie Coyle and Marco Silvestri in the Leeds back line, Maxime Biamou nipped in to win a penalty from Coyle, and Jamie Collins stepped up to dispatch a left-footed spot kick into the corner of the net.
Leeds attempted to get back into the game but never really came close to an equaliser, and their misery was compounded when Liam Cooper was sent off for a second booking, before Sutton celebrated wildly as they made it through to the fifth round.
After an embarrassing afternoon for Leeds, former midfielder Andy Couzens took to Twitter to suggest that Monk’s men were ‘rubbish’, and admitted that the better side won the game.
Pundit and former Leeds striker Noel Whelan added a one-word reaction on Twitter too, simply stating that he was ‘gutted’ with the defeat.
