The Newcastle United centre-back needs a change of scenery and Wolverhampton Wanderers could be the perfect environment to get back on track.
It is fair to say Grant Hanley’s Newcastle United career has not panned out the way he would have wanted.
Just six months and ten appearances after apparently taking the next substantial step forward in his career when arriving from Blackburn Rovers, the Sun reports that the Scotland international could now be on the verge of a return to the Championship’s lower regions.
Paul Lambert’s Wolves have been on the lookout for an experienced second tier centre-half and Hanley, the former Blackburn captain, fits the bill.
The Sun add that the Midlands club are interested in rescuing Hanley from his Newcastle nightmare via a short-term loan with the possibility of a permanent deal in the summer.
And, although the Magpies splashed out £6 million for the 25-year-old just a few months ago according to the Daily Mail, few on the Tyneside terraces would be disappointed to wave goodbye so soon.
After all, Hanley has been stuck behind Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Chancel Mbemba in the pecking order since day one, his only league start coming in the opening day defeat to Fulham.
In short, his wages are going to waste and, with Newcastle closing in on a return to the Premier League, they need players ready to make the step up. Hanley, as epitomised by his below-par performance in Newcastle’s humiliating FA Cup exit to Oxford United, is not one of them.
If he cannot cut it at the Kassam, what chance would he have at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge?
With mid-table Wolves, Hanley could find his level once more.
