West Ham United have snapped up Robert Snodgrass from Hull City.

New West Ham United signing Robert Snodgrass has told the club’s official website that he spoke to club legend Frank McAvennie before deciding to join the Hammers.

Snodgrass, 29, has played a key role in Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League last season, and had emerged as their shining light this term.

The Scottish winger has notched nine goals and three assists in all competitions this season, impressing many with his creativity and his outstanding set piece deliveries.

Unsurprisingly, Snodgrass attracted major interest with Hull fighting against relegation, and after weeks of speculation, the former Leeds United star penned a three-and-a-half year contract with West Ham United on Friday evening.

West Ham confirmed that the deal was worth £10.2million, and he becomes the club’s second January signing after landing Jose Fonte from Southampton, with the Hammers seemingly re-focusing their attentions on signing proven Premier League players.

With the Hammers facing up to life without wantaway playmaker Dimitri Payet, manager Slaven Bilic clearly felt that he needed another creative winger with dead ball ability – and he has landed just that in Snodgrass.

The winger himself spoke to the West Ham official website after completing his move, and revealed that he spoke to club legend and fellow Scot Frank McAvennie before making the switch to the London Stadium.

McAvennie was something of a West Ham hero during the 1980’s and early 1990’s, as he hit 49 goals in 153 league appearances for the club across two spells in East London, and his words about the club clearly tempted Snodgrass into a move.

Snodgrass added that other Scots such as Ray Stewart and Christian Dailly also enjoyed spells with the club, and would love to emulate their success with West Ham, but did note that this is now about him, and not his compatriots.

“The traditions of the Club also attracted me and I spoke to Frank McAvennie, who sold the Club really well, which was great,” said Snodgrass. “Ray Stewart and Christian Dailly were also here, so if I can do as well as Frank and the rest that would be great.”

“This is my own chapter and it’s about me and not them and I firmly believe in my ability and that I can go and get a relationship with these fans and my new teammates and really drive the team up the league,” he added.
