Liverpool are currently in the midst of a worrying run of form and results.
When writing his column for the Mirror, Robbie Savage was highly critical of the way in which Liverpool have performed over recent weeks, highlighting how tired they seem to look as a group, and suggested that they have the weakest squad out of the top six clubs in the Premier League.
The Reds have struggled recently without Sadio Mane, who is on duty at the African Cup of Nations, and Jürgen Klopp hasn’t been able to call upon anyone with similar attributes to fill the void left behind by the Senegal international.
Liverpool’s Sadio Mane
Liverpool have taken just two points from their last three league games, and currently sit in fourth spot in the Premier League table, a full 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
And Savage discussed the Merseyside outfit’s title credentials, when writing his column for the Mirror, suggesting that a top four finish would represent a job well done:
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp
“Without Mane, they have won just once this month – in an FA Cup replay against Plymouth. And Liverpool’s results in the New Year, when they have been playing two games a week, have not justified the level of squad rotation Klopp has used. Should he have dipped into the transfer market to provide extra cover for Mane? Perhaps. You could argue Klopp’s overall squad is weaker than Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham. For me, if Liverpool finish in the top four, it’s a job well done.”
The challenge for the Reds now will be to reassert themselves in the title race, and there will be no better opportunity for them to do that than on Tuesday night when they welcome Chelsea to Anfield.
