Leeds United could have sold Alex Mowatt for £7m in 2015

The midfielder has joined Barnsley this week for a fraction of that fee.

Leeds United have sold midfielder Alex Mowatt to Yorkshire rivals Barnsley for a fee reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post to be in the region of £500,000.

The midfielder was the club’s Player of the Year back in 2014-15 but has failed to push on since then. This season he has been used sparingly by Garry Monk, but his sale still came as a surprise to many.

The fee involved is also something that will intrigue Leeds fans, considering how much they might have fetched for Mowatt two years ago.

In April 2015 The Mirror reported that Steve Bruce’s Hull City were joining the likes of Liverpool, Everton and West Ham in pursuing the midfield talent. The fee being quoted then was in the region of £7 million.

There is no indication such a bid came through but it is a sign of how little he has progressed in the past 18 months that he has been sold for £6.5 million less than his 2015 valuation.

Leeds will certainly hope they are not left to rue his sale to Barnsley at such a reduced fee.
