Leeds fans react on Twitter as Alex Mowatt leaves Elland Road for Barnsley

Leeds' Alex Mowatt celebrates scoring their second goal

Alex Mowatt has left Leeds United to join Championship rivals Barnsley.

Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the news that Alex Mowatt has left Elland Road for Championship rivals Barnsley for an undisclosed fee (via Barnsley's official website).

Mowatt was arguably the most first-team ready of all the youth academy graduates that have pushed for a chance when he burst onto the scene in 2013, but his career has stagnated over the last couple of years.

This season had seen Mowatt struggle to find his ideal position. Based on their current form, Garry Monk's 4-2-3-1 system seems to have got the best out of the squad he has available.

The one player to perhaps suffer because of the system however, is Mowatt. The position that the youngster showed glimpses of real quality in was the central attacking midfield role, but unfortunately, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe have been brilliant when deployed there.

That was perhaps why Leeds allowed the 21-year-old's contract to run into its final six months (via Yorkshire Evening Post), and ultimately why they were willing to allow the talented midfielder to move to Oakwell.

While there is a sense of disappointment amongst Leeds supporters following the news of Mowatt's departure, the disappointment does not stem from him joining a team in the same division but actually seems to predominantly centre around the fact that he will not realise his obvious potential with the Whites
