HITC Sport understands that a deal has been put to Middlesbrough.

Aston Villa have offered Jack Grealish to Middlesbrough in exchange for long-term target Jordan Rhodes, HITC Sport understands.

Villa, like Sheffield Wednesday, have been in contact with Boro all month about Rhodes – who knows that he is surplus to requirements at the Riverside Stadium under Aitor Karanka.

Rhodes arrived 12 months ago from Blackburn Rovers, and he played his part in their promotion to the Championship at the end of last season.

However, Karanka has never been convinced and has barely used him this term, which has led to both Wednesday and Villa making bids for him this month, although all approaches have been turned down thus far.

Celtic's daunting Champions League qualification challenge

Wednesday are understood to be willing to go to £8million but Villa have not gone above £6million – but Steve Bruce is pushing his bosses to get Rhodes.

Now during talks, HITC Sport understands that Villa have floated the idea of sending Grealish to Middlesbrough. The 21-year-old is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in England.

Boro are now considering the idea, with Villa suggesting that the deal would work as a straight swap.

Middlesbrough could see Grealish as an ideal replacement for wantaway Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez, who has handed in a transfer request and is desperate to quit this month. Leicester have already had one bid rejected for him.
