West Ham United’s Jonathan Calleri finally scored his first goal for the club at the weekend.
Former Hammers striker Tony Cottee backed Jonathan Calleri to come good after opening his account for West Ham on Saturday, when writing his column for the Newham Recorder, and compared the Argentine’s recent struggles to his early years at the club.
The 23-year-old made the move to East London in the summer on a season-long loan, but has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just seven Premier League appearances, with all of those coming from the bench.
And Cottee, who scored 148 goals for the Hammers during two separate spells with the club, shared his delight at seeing Calleri finally break his scoring duck for West Ham, when writing his column for the Newham Recorder:
West Ham United’s Jonathan Calleri celebrates
“It was great to see Jonathan Calleri open his account. Now he has scored a goal, however fortunate it might have been, he will hopefully score plenty more. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck. I remember in the 85/86 season, Frank McAvennie had started the season well, but I didn’t score in the first six games and I even went on to the bench. Then in the seventh game against Sheffield Wednesday I hit a weak volley which went through the keeper’s legs and I then went on to score in the next six games.”

Calleri has actually been linked with a move away from the Olympic Stadium this month, and his future at West Ham will surely depend heavily on whether or not Slaven Bilic manages to complete the signing of Scott Hogan from Brentford.
And with the Hammers’ next game not until after the transfer window has slammed shut, it will be interesting to see if Calleri is at the club when Bilic chooses his side to take on Manchester City.
