Craig Gordon shouldn’t swap Celtic for Chelsea; it would almost mean retirement

The Celtic shot-stopper has been reborn under Brendan Rodgers so why would he be content to sit on the Chelsea bench?

If one player is all too aware of just how brief a footballer’s career is, it’s Craig Gordon, the in-form Celtic goalkeeper linked with a surprise switch to Chelsea by The Telegraph.

After two years out of the game with a series of debilitating injuries, the former Hearts goalkeeper looked certain to hang up his gloves and trade in his studs for slippers. Until Celtic came calling that is.

And, at the age of 34, Gordon is more than making up for lost time, two uninterrupted seasons of first-team football rewarded with successive Scottish Premiership titles. With Celtic 19 points clear, a third is most certainly on the way.

Unless, of course, he is tempted by the sort of once in a lifetime offer that would make even the most contented professional consider his options.

According to The Telegraph, Gordon is flanking Espanyol’s Diego Lopez and Uruguay international Fernando Muslera on Chelsea’s three-man shortlist should Asmir Begovic depart this month after growing achey on the Stamford Bridge bench.

However, while the prospect of working under Antonio Conte, travelling to exotic destinations in the latter stages of European competitions and lifting Premier League titles is undoubtedly tempting, Gordon will be more than aware that a switch to Stamford Bridge would mean swapping his undisputed number one status at Celtic for the odd run out in the EFL Cup.

Furthermore, it’s no exaggeration to suggest that Gordon is enjoying the form of his life after ousting Dorus De Vries and embracing Brendan Rodgers desire to build from the back.

“I’ve probably never felt this good,” Gordon told the Daily Record. Turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks.

He could be forgiven for being allured by the glitz and glamour of London town and Chelsea blue, but Gordon has already lost two years of his career. Moving to Stamford Bridge would almost equate to semi-retirement.
