Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bolster their defensive ranks this month.

News broke yesterday claim that Spurs are interested in signing Andrea Ranocchia as cover for the injured Jan Vertonghen, with the Evening Standard reporting that the north London outfit are preparing a £5 million bid for the Italian.

There is a better option out there for Tottenham, however, and he wouldn’t cost a penny.

Former Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres is currently a free agent after being realised by the Old Lady when his contract expired in the summer.

Now, the 68-capped Uruguayan international has not had the best of times recently with regards to injuries, but he is still a classy operator, and his availability on a free means there would be little risk involved in bringing him to White Hart Lane.

Whilst he is not the tallest of defenders, his reading of the game is second-to-none, and he is a well accomplished distributor of the football – something that would surely appeal to Mauricio Pochettino.

Also, he is only 10 months older than Ranocchia, and is arguably a far more well-rounded defender.

Caceres is in possession of a trophy cabinet that can be matched by few the game, that includes five Serie A titles, a La Liga title and a Champions League winning medal.

And it is that kind of winning mentality to could prove to be such an asset to a Tottenham side that is currently bereft of winners.

That lack of experience proved costly to them during the latter stages of last year’s campaign, with dropped points against West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and Newcastle United eventually costing them the league title.

And the addition of Caceres this month could go a long way to ensuring that Spurs are in a better place to challenge for the title, both physically and mentally.
