The Black Cats striker has been ruled out for 10 weeks with knee ligament damage.

Sunderland fans have been reacting on social media to the news striker Victor Anichebe has been ruled out of action for 10 weeks with knee ligament damage.

Making his return from injury versus West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, the Nigerian was brought on as substitute just after the hour mark. Despite being hurt shortly after coming on at The Hawthorns, Anichebe still completed the match.

Now however, it is understood a scan has since confirmed that he suffered medial ligament damage and that means he is likely to be out until April.

With Duncan Watmore already on the sidelines, David Moyes is now tasked with bringing short-term cover in for the forward with just eight days until the transfer window slams shut.

Despite having scored just three goals during his short spell on Wearside, his back-to-back triple inside 180 minutes was a reminder of Victor Anichebe's threat.

The news comes as a huge blow in Sunderland's hopes of avoiding the drop down to the Sky Bet Championship, with fans now almost resigned to relegation come May.
