Liverpool’s defensive frailties came back to bite them on Saturday.
Speaking to the press during his pre-match press conference, Reds boss Jürgen Klopp explained how his side’s defensive frailties will not be solved by signing one player, but by improving the cohesiveness and solidarity of his back-line as a whole, as quoted by the club’s official website.
Only one team inside the top seven have conceded more goals than Liverpool this term, as they continue to struggle without summer signing Joel Matip.
But Klopp insisted that throwing money at the problem is not the correct solution, when speaking to reporters, explaining the need for his defence to improve as a unit, as quoted by LiverpoolFC.com:
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp
“I know you [the media] have spoken a lot about defence, but you always speak about [individual] players – I speak about the whole defensive work of the team, so that’s different. If it would be as easy as you buy one new player and all the problems are solved, then why would I be silly enough not to do it? It is not like this. We have to improve still, that’s what we know about.”

The Merseyside outfit slipped 10 points behind Chelsea following this weekend’s results, and it is becoming more and more obvious that they will struggle to mount a sustained title challenge with a defence that seems to be incapable of keeping clean sheets.
If Liverpool can somehow find a way to improve their defensive displays, however, they certainly possess the quality at the other end of the pitch that will enable them to win big games, and in turn, push the Blues all the way.
