Goalkeeper has been something of a problem position for Everton this season so who better than the in-form Tom Heaton to solve the problem?
While few Everton fans are lamenting their failure to secure the signatures of Moussa Sissoko or Lucas Perez, Ronald Koeman’s inability to attract a top class Premier League goalkeeper to Goodison Park in the summer remains arguably the biggest mistake of his Toffees tenure.
Barring that superb individual performance against Manchester City in October, where both Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne were denied from twelve yards, former Dutch international Maarten Stekelenberg has shown exactly why he spent the last few seasons glued to the benches of Fulham, Southampton and Monaco.
Meanwhile, Joel Robles continues to perform when called upon but, as Sadio Mane’s last-gasp Merseyside derby winner proved, the Spaniard lacks the consistency or the all-round skillset to excel consistently in this most punishing of leagues.
Therefore, Everton fans were understandably delighted to learn that The Sun has linked them with a move for Burnley’s £15 million-rated Tom Heaton, one of the most unheralded stars of the Premier League campaign.
The 30-year-old, also on the radar of Liverpool and Manchester City, is the major reason why The Clarets have conceded just 33 goals this season while he can reasonably lay claim to being one of the most important players in the top flight.
After all, Burnley’s survival hopes appear to rest on the shoulders of a man whose remarkable reflex save to deny Charlie Austin in October appears to have the Save of the Season award sewn up.
The Goodison Park goalmouth has severely lacked such heroics.
