We pick four legendary figures for West Bromwich Albion’s Mount Rushmore.
This week, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America, taking up the same office held by Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. All this talk of Presidents got us thinking; which influential figures would make West Bromwich Albion’s football Mount Rushmore? Here are our picks:
Jesse Pennington
Pennington’s 19-year playing career at West Brom, which was interrupted by the First World War, makes his a legendary figure of the club’s early history. The left-back captained Albion to their first – and only to date – League title win in the 1919-20 campaign. Pennington’s role in this club milestone makes him a shoe-in for the Baggies’ Mount Rushmore.
Jeff Astle
‘The King’ is an unquestionable choice for Albion’s Mount Rushmore. After joining from Notts County in 1964, Astle went on to fire a remarkable 174 goals in a 10-year spell at the Hawthorns. Astle lifted the League Cup and FA Cup in his time at the Albion, scoring in the finals of both competitions. The forward will forever be the King of West Bromwich Albion.
Tony Brown
Holding the record for most goals and appearances, this wouldn’t be a West Brom Mount Rushmore without Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown. His incredible 17-year Albion career saw him feature prominently in both Alan Ashman’s FA Cup winning side and Ron Atkinson’s exhilarating 70’s team. Brown is still involved with the club and his statue outside the Hawthorns is a reminder of his dedication to West Brom.
Gary Megson
Megson might not be everyone’s choice for West Brom’s Mount Rushmore, but his influence on the club’s current position should not be underestimated. The passionate manager built a hard-working side, featuring the likes of Darren Moore, Russell Hoult and Derek McInnes, which achieved the impressive feat of bringing top flight football back to the Hawthorns. Alongside Chairman Jeremy Peace, he laid the foundations for Albion’s achievements –so far – in the 21st Century.
