The Swiss international is wanted by the Champions League regulars.

Reports in Switzerland are suggesting that Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Almen Abdi is a target for Champions League regulars FC Basel.

It is reported by Blick that the Swiss giants are keen to bring the 30-year-old midfielder back to Switzerland. The Owls player, who has six caps for the Swiss national team, left boyhood club FC Zurich for Le Mans in 2009 and has not played in Switzerland again since.

The report claims his affiliation with Basel’s rivals Zurich may be a stumbling block but that the RotBlau are confident they can put some sort of deal together.

If Abdi did make the move he would be hoping to help Basel to the Swiss Super League title and would have his eyes fixed on a potential Champions League campaign next season.

The midfielder only joined Sheffield Wednesday from Watford in the summer but has found first-team football difficult to come by at Hillsborough and the chance to challenge for silverware at the historic St Jakob Park would likely be a move he could ill afford to refuse.

Sheffield Wednesday will no doubt wish to be fairly compensated for any sale, but Abdi might be better off making this move.
