The Newcastle United midfielder is set to bring an end to his career at St James’ Park.
Cheick Tiote could finally bring his Newcastle United misery to an end this month with The Chronicle reporting the Sporting Gijon are close to signing him on a free transfer.
It seems a long time since the feisty, yellow card-collecting Ivorian was dominating top flight midfields alongside Yohan Cabaye, having made just 32 league appearances in the last three seasons.
And he has slipped ever further from contention under Rafa Benitez this season, making only his first start of 2016/17 in Saturday’s FA Cup draw against Birmingham City.
Understandably, Tiote looked completely off the pace and a shadow of the tenacious, combative midfielder that was linked with a £20 million move to Chelsea all the way back in 2012, per The Independent.
And The Chronicle claims that the president of La Liga strugglers Sporting Gijon will travel to Tyneside to discuss the possibility of signing the international, whose contract expires at the end of the season, on a free this month.
This comes a year after The Mirror reported that Tiote was on the verge of completing an £8 million deal to sign for Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua and Newcastle will surely be wishing they had forced through his sale 12 months ago.
