Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Everton midfielder.

Robbie Savage has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he would be looking to leave Everton if he were Ross Barkley.

Barkley has endured a difficult start to the season and was this week linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur - a club at which the England midfielder would fit nicely according to Savage.

The ex-player turned pundit also suggested that part of the reason for Barkley's poor form was the negative response he receives from the Goodison Park faithful whenever he gives the ball away.

"I think Ross Barkley - it’s just my point of view - needs a change of a football club," Savage said. "I think Spurs were linked with him, looking at that team I think he would fit nicely in there.

"Always when I’ve been to Everton, if Ross Barkley gives the ball away I would say the majority of the crowd turn on him quicker than anyone else.

"If I was Ross Barkley - me, as a player - I would be looking for a change."

Barkley's contract expires in 18 months time and Everton boss Ronald Koeman told the Guardian this week that a renewal is not currently a priority for the Toffees.

The 23-year-old rose through the ranks at his boyhood club, for whom he has made 157 appearances and scored 24 goals.

The Daily Mail reported this week that Tottenham have cooled their interest in Barkley due to the fact that White Hart Lane pair Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen both play in his position.
