The Boro striker is out of favour at the Riverside and Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday could pounce.

Middlesbrough’s David Nugent has been mentioned as a target by a number of Championship clubs including Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Northern Echo.

Nugent’s one start this season was against Fulham in the EFL Cup in August – a fixture which yielded the striker’s only goal of the campaign – and the last of his four substitute appearances was against Everton three months ago.

The report claims the 31-year-old would be allowed to leave next month, if the deal was right for all parties.

Boro’s Yorkshire rivals Leeds and Wednesday are both thought to be in the market for strikers this winter, with West Ham’s Ashley Fletcher and Nugent’s teammate Jordan Rhodes listed as targets for the Whites and the Owls, respectively.

Leeds have been heavily reliant on Chris Wood this season, who has scored 11 of their 26 league goals, while Wednesday recently lost Gary Hooper to a hamstring injury.

And Nugent’s track record in the second tier – 103 goals in 306 games and two promotions – is sure to appeal to the pair, who have strengthened their play-off credentials in recent weeks.

The Liverpudlian’s former club Preston North End are another club mentioned in the report.

Would Nugent be a good option for Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday?
