Poll: Best Championship goal of 2016?

Newcastle United's Jonjo Shelvey celebrates after he scored their second goal

Goals for players from Newcastle, Hull, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all been selected for our poll.

Here at HITC Sport we have been running a poll to find out who scored the best goal in the Championship this year. With England's second league supplying no end of thrilling games and unbelievable goals, it has been a tough task to cut down the potential candidates. However, we have done so, and the five candidates are as follows:

Mohamed Diame (Hull City) vs Sheffield Wednesday

What a time and a place for Hull City's Mohamed Diame to score one of the goals of the year as his strike ensured Hull City of a place in the Premier League. With the Championship play-off final locked at 0-0 after 72 minutes, he curled a delicious effort into the back of the net from 25-yards out to spark wild celebrations from Steve Bruce's side. The goal won them the game and promotion, while it may also earn him the win in our poll.

Jiri Skalak (Brighton) vs QPR

Jiri Skalak scored one of the goals of last season as he smashed in an effort from 30-yeards out to put Brighton 2-0 up and take the game away from QPR. In truth, Anthony Knockaert's free-kick knocked the stuffing out of QPR and that was the winning goal, however, Skalak's strike made sure of the points and what a way it was for the player to score his first goal for Brighton. The win also helped them to go level on points with second-placed Burnley, third only on goal difference.

Gary Gardner (Nottingham Forest) vs Hull City

Nottingham Forest held promotion chasing Hull City to a 1-1 draw in the middle of March as they dented the Tigers' hopes of ascending to the Premier League. Sone Aluko's strike made sure the points were shared, but it was Forest's Gary Gardner that grabbed all the attention for his goal. A neat passing move from the visitors seemed to be setting something up for Forest, however, nobody, and perhaps not even Gardner, could have foreseen what came next as he launched a strike from 30-yards into the back of the net. It was a sublime effort, and one which threatened to hurt Hull's season at the time.

Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle United) vs QPR

It was an incredible performance from Rafael Benitez's Newcastle as they obliterated QPR in a 6-0 win. The home side did not ever really get going as their fans were forced to watch a demolition job from the visitors. Ayoze Perez, Ciaran Clark, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Grant Hanley all found the net, while Jonjo Shelvey struck twice in the game. However, it was Shelvey's second goal that caught the eye as the ball was played back to him, he took a touch and then curled a sublime 25-yard shot into the top corner. It was an unbelievably good strike and it killed the game off completely.

Ayoze Perez (Newcastle United) vs Ipswich

Newcastle continued their fine form with a consummate 3-0 win over Ipswich in October. The win was especially impressive as they controlled the game so well via the boot of Jonjo Shelvey and the engine of Jack Colback. Matt Ritchie scored after Ayoze Perez hit a brace, with his first goal in particular an impressive one. The ball was swung in from the wing and it evaded any real attacking touch from the Magpies, but it fell perfectly onto the boot of Perez who lashed home with his first time volley to score the fastest goal in the Championship this season.
