Newcastle United star has muted response to Championship title talk

Newcastle United are currently top of the Championship table.

Newcastle's on-loan star Christian Atsu explained how the club is heading in the right direction, as they look to build a better future, but played down talk of winning the Championship title, during an exclusive interview with the Chronicle.

After a slow start to life at St James' Park, the 24-year-old Ghana international has been in superb form of late, and has begun to establish himself as a key member of Rafa Benitez' team.

Atsu spoke to the Chronicle about Newcastle's season so far, but was cautious when asked whether his side were a shoe-in to win the league title:

"I can’t even comment on winning the Championship. We are not even finished playing the first half of the season. In football anything can happen. We are just focused on each and every game. That’s the most important thing. We can’t predict the future, but we can work towards it. We are trying to build a better future here.”

The Tyneside outfit currently sit comfortably at the top of the Championship table, and hold a one point lead over second placed Brighton & Hove Albion, but more importantly, a seven point lead over third placed Huddersfield, with a game in hand on the Terriers.

And with an extremely winnable run of games ahead of them, starting with a trip to 21st placed Burton Albion today, Newcastle have every opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the table.
