West Ham United fans finally received some good news yesterday, with the announcement of Reece Oxford agreeing terms on a new deal.
During an interview with the club's official website, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic shared his delight at Reece Oxford signing a new long-term deal with the club, suggesting that it could prove to be a major moment in West Ham's history.
The 18-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal yesterday that runs until the summer of 2021, and the Hammers essentially now hold more leverage, should one of the league's more prestigious clubs attempt to sign Oxford.
And Bilic offered his opinion on the youngster signing a new deal, highlighting the positive effect it could have on the club as a whole, when speaking to whufc.com:
West Ham's Reece Oxford
“I am delighted and it is major news for both the Club and the player that he has committed his long-term future to West Ham United. I really believe he has got everything. On paper he has all the abilities to become a world-class player and it is now up to him to train hard and for us to manage him well for him to fulfil it."
Oxford has hardly featured for the Hammers so far this season, but maybe now, with the announcement of his new contract with the club, he will gain more first-team opportunities.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic
The problem for Bilic now, with his side entrenched in a relegation battle, is that it's such a difficult situation to throw a youngster into, what with the focus being on achieving positive results, rather than producing commendable performances.
Oxford certainly has the potential, but if he is not given more chances to prove himself at West Ham for the remainder of the season, surely a loan move away from the club would benefit his development.
