According to the Daily Mail, Southampton have joined the race to sign CSKA Moscow playmaker Alan Dzagoev – but Everton appear to be very keen on him.
The Saints have struggled for goals this season, scoring just 14 goals in 16 games this term; only Middlesbrough have scored fewer, and Claude Puel's men failed to find the net again as they drew 0-0 at Stoke City on Wednesday night.
Russia playmaker Alan Dzagoev applauds
With Charlie Austin out for some time with a shoulder injury, Dusan Tadic going through his own injury problems and Sofiane Boufal set to join up with Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations, Southampton should be active in January in the pursuit of attacking reinforcements.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Southampton want to sign CSKA Moscow playmaker Alan Dzagoev, with the player ready to play in England according to his agent.
CSKA Moscow's Alan Dzagoev scores against Tottenham
Dzagoev, 26, has been a key player for CSKA ever since arriving at the club in 2008, and he's racked up 63 goals and 84 assists for CSKA in 287 games, becoming one of the most highly-rated attacking midfielders in Europe.
The Russian international – who has notched nine goals in 50 caps for his country – is believed to be seeking a move to the Premier League, with Southampton one of a number of clubs interested, as CSKA will demand a £15m fee.
Dzagoev would certainly bring some creativity to this Southampton team, and whilst he'd be a great signing for the Saints in their search for more goals, they aren't alone in tracking him.
The midfielder scored against Tottenham in the Champions League last week, and it's claimed that Everton director of football Steve Walsh was spotted sitting with CSKA representatives during the game in the hope of landing Dzagoev.
Swansea City are also being linked with Dzagoev, and with the January transfer window just around the corner, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him make the move to England next month – and we could see a real fight for his signature.
