The Romanian international is currently not a regular at VfB Stuttgart.

Leeds United are flying high in the Championship at present and are looking like sticking around in the fight for promotion.

The West Yorkshire side will however surely be looking to improve the first-team in the winter with Monk already admitting the club will be looking to make some additions.

So, should he look at a target he tried to sign as Swansea City manager back in January 2015?

The player in question is Romanian playmaker Alexandru Maxim.

Monk confirmed to Wales Online, nearly two years ago now, that his then Swansea City side were indeed interested in making a move for the VfB Stuttgart star.

Maxim came through the ranks at Espanyol, where he was coached by current Leeds United assistant manager Pep Clotet. He was assistant at Swansea at the time and likely played a role in the interest in his services.

Back then Maxim was an up and coming talent in the Bundesliga – who had only just been linked with a move to Liverpool. In the years since, Maxim’s career has gone slightly stale.

He started just nine times for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga last season, as they were relegated from the German top-flight.

Now he is still struggling to feature for the side in the 2.Bundesliga and perhaps the time has come for a change of scenery.

Despite this the 26-year-old is still immensely talented. He plays in a similar fashion to Pablo Hernandez, who is currently out injured, and would provide excellent cover for the Spanish wizard.

He can also play from the left-wing and has 27 caps for the Romanian national team – so is a class act who could add some quality depth to the Leeds team.

Leeds would not be making a mistake if they made a move for Maxim in January.
