Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic has struggled to displace Dwight Gayle in Rafael Benitez’s starting line-up this season.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Rafael Benitez does not want to sell Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic has generally been used as back-up for Newcastle so far this season, with Dwight Gayle establishing himself as the Magpies’ main man up-front.

Gayle has netted 13 goals in 15 Championship appearances so far this campaign, to keep Mitrovic out of the side.

However, Benitez still rates the Serbian international and he does not want to lose him.

Mitrovic has been linked with the likes of Napoli recently, but Newcastle are said to be under no pressure to sell.

Newcastle do not need to raise funds, and it is said that Benitez has his eye on recruiting a new striker in January rather than losing one.

Newcastle would only considering selling Mitrovic is if his departure lead to a high profile replacement being brought in.

Benitez would like to add another goalscorer to his ranks, and if the money from Mitrovic’s transfer would enable him to bring in a top quality forward, he may be tempted to part ways.
