Everton should target Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in January

Everton need a number one goalkeeper as Maarten Stekelenburg continues to struggle.

If West Ham United are targeting a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the January transfer window (as reported by the Daily Mail), then Everton should rival them for his signature.

The Blues currently have Maarten Stekelenburg as their number one at present but the Dutchman is not a long term solution.

He has impressed in short spells at Goodison Park but his mistake against Manchester United on Sunday shows the position is one that needs improving.

They have already been linked to Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford, while Joe Hart is another suggestion.

Both of those will likely only be available in the summer, though, and the goalkeeper situation is one that Everton really need to fix now. In short, Begovic is the answer.

The former Stoke man has plenty of Premier League experience and has proven his quality on more than one occasion.

Indeed, he is also a clear upgrade on both of the Toffees' current options, Maarten Stekelenburg and Joel Robles.

He is also available on loan, meaning they could secure him temporarily and focus their spending on improving the other areas of the squad that need attention.

It is a deal that would suit all parties and if Begovic is available, then Everton should be at the front of the queue for his signature.
