Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has commented on Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told The Mirror that he thinks it’s a shame how Gylfi Sigurdsson left the club for Swansea City in 2014.

Spurs meet Swansea in the Premier League this weekend, and whilst the teams need the points for very different reasons, the game also sees playmaker Sigurdsson return to White Hart Lane.

The Iceland international, 27, joined Spurs from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2012, as his form on loan at Swansea during the second half of the 2011-12 season – scoring seven goals in 19 games – earned him a move to North London.

In his two years with Spurs, Sigurdsson hit 13 goals in 83 games but failed to nail down a regular first-team place under Andre Villas-Boas or Tim Sherwood, and was allowed to leave the club when Pochettino arrived in 2014.

Sigurdsson returned to Swansea in a deal which saw Michel Vorm and Ben Davies sign for Tottenham, and a move back to South Wales has allowed the attacking midfielder to play his best football again.

20 goals in his first two seasons back at Swansea established him as one of the Premier League’s top playmakers, whilst he has been the shining light in a struggling Swansea side this season, notching four goals and four assists in the Premier League.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash, Pochettino has told The Mirror that he thinks Sigurdsson’s departure is a shame, as he would now be the perfect player for Tottenham.

“After he [Sigurdsson] moved to Swansea, we saw him develop,” said Pochettino. “I think he is a perfect player for us. But, in that moment, it was the club’s decision, his decision to move to Swansea and find another way.”

“Every time we’ve met him, he’s shown his qualities, not just as a player, but as a man. All the people here talk about him very highly. It’s a shame, but that’s football. Sometimes you spread your weight. But you never know in football,” he added.

After those comments were made, Spurs fans took to Twitter to react, as many believe that Sigurdsson would be a great signing, urging the club to try and re-sign him.

Many believe that Sigurdsson should have been given more time at White Hart Lane, and could have turned his Tottenham career around under Pochettino, just as fellow midfielder Mousa Dembele did.
