The Rangers boss has not yet disclosed the indentity of the player he’s trying to bring to Ibrox.

Rangers manager Mark Waburton has confirmed via the Glasgow Evening Times that he is chasing a dynamic, goalscoring midfielder from overseas in the upcoming transfer window.

Initially, it was reported that Porto’s Joao Teixeira – who the Rangers boss signed during his Brentford days – was the player in question, although the Daily Record has since poured cold water on that particular claim.

Warburton did, however, state: “we know very much what [the player] can do,” suggesting the mystery man is someone he’s worked with before.

So could it be Jota? The Spaniard ticks both boxes, having also played for Warburton’s Brentford side, and scored 11 goals in 42 Championship appearances the season before last.

Where is he now? Loaned to La Liga side Eibar since January, having requested a return to his homeland for personal reasons – although he did sign a contract extension at the time of his exit, promising he’d be back.

And having played just five times all season, there has been talk that Brentford might recall the winger this winter.

With Lewis MacLeod – who joined the Bees from Rangers 18 months ago – out for the rest of the campaign, it could be the case that Jota’s services are required back at Griffin Park.

Although with Alan Judge on the comeback trail and not much football to show for the past two campaigns (23 appearances since August 2015), Brentford might sanction another loan spell for Jota, in the hope that he returns all guns blazing in time for next season.

Rangers, with the lure of Warburton and regular football at Ibrox, could find themselves in pole position, should that prove the case.
