Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas predicts Manchester United v West Ham score; Andy Carroll needed?

General view as the teams come out before the game

Charlie Nicholas is backing Manchester United to beat West Ham this evening.

Pundit Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that he thinks Manchester United will beat West Ham United 2-1 at Old Trafford this evening.

After seeing Liverpool and Hull City reach the semi-finals of the EFL Cup with respective wins over Leeds United and Newcastle United on Tuesday evening, it's now the turn of Manchester United and West Ham United who lock horns for a place in the last four.

Jose Mourinho and Slaven Bilic went head-to-head on Sunday afternoon as the two sides met in the Premier League, with Diafra Sakho putting West Ham in front at Old Trafford before Zlatan Ibrahimovic rescued a 1-1 draw for Mourinho's men.

Just days on from that game, the two sides are at it again tonight, though very different line-ups are expected, with both managers no doubt tempted to rotate their players with Premier League games coming up at the weekend.

Ahead of the game, pundit Charlie Nicholas has spoken to Sky Sports about the tie, and suggested that West Ham did 'very well' against United on Sunday afternoon.

Nicholas thinks West Ham may need Andy Carroll back to lead the line up front having been out since August, with Sunday's goalscorer Sakho ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The former Arsenal ace added that the Red Devils have a problem at Old Trafford, but expects them to claim a 2-1 win this evening – and wouldn't be surprised to see the game go beyond 90 minutes.

“Well, West Ham did very well on Sunday and Manchester United continue to be the most unlucky team in the Premier League!” said Nicholas. “They have a problem at Old Trafford of playing well, but not getting wins, and now the annoyance of Jose Mourinho is clear for everybody to see.”

“West Ham might need to get Andy Carroll back into the mix as it sounds like Diafra Sakho has picked up another injury. They're running out of bodies. I think Mourinho will make quite a few changes and I wouldn't be surprised if this went to extra time, but I'm expecting the hosts to edge it,” he added.
