Newcastle have made a sensational start to the season in the Championship.
The Magpies have bounced back from relegation in a sensational manner, having made a brilliant start to the season. Already, many pundits are confident that they will be back at the highest level next year.
And Hayden - who has been one of Newcastle's most consistent performers this term - explained that Benitez's decision to name the team less than two hours before kick-off has had a positive impact on his form.
"It's the best way for me," he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
"It keeps everyone on their toes. Nobody's certain of anything and nobody can rest on their laurels when it comes to training. For me, it helps the group.
"Others might have a different opinion and prefer to know the day before or two days before.
"But, for me, I always give 100% in every training session. I always want to do well and improve."

While the 21-year-old concedes that some may feel differently about Benitez's strategy, it certainly appears to be working perfectly.
Newcastle have won their last nine games in all competitions, including eight in the Championship, which has left them five points clear at the top of the table and given them a place in the last eight of the EFL Cup.
And with the side keeping five clean sheets and scoring 25 times during that run, it is surely safe to assume that Benitez will continue to leave team selection to the last minute in future.
