The Italian has been tipped by some to replace Rob Green after his recent error.
Leeds United fans were left deflated at the weekend after Newcastle United put in a polished and confident display at Elland Road, beating Garry Monk’s side 2-0.
It was a result they fully deserved for a strong performance and Leeds fans have little to gripe about in defeat.
However, the manner in which they conceded the first goal will not be remembered fondly.
Leeds United's Marco Silvestri celebrates with team mates after the penalty shootout
Jack Colback’s innocuous ball into the box should have been easily gathered by Leeds goalie Rob Green or pushed over the bar. The former England international did neither. He dropped the ball into the path of one of the Championship’s more ruthless finishers in Dwight Gayle, who put the ball in the back of the net.
It was poor from Green and, after his recent heroics in the EFL Cup, it has seen many Leeds fans calling on Monk to give Marco Silvestri a run in the first-team again.
Leeds United's Marco Silvestri
The Italian lost his place to Green after he arrived from QPR this summer but has performed well in the EFL Cup, including his penalty shoot-out brilliance against Norwich City.
But what Leeds fans must not forget, is how continually frustrated they used to be with Silvestri’s performances.
Newcastle United's Dwight Gayle scores their first goal after Leeds United's Rob Green fumbles the ball
The Italian is an excellent shot-stopper but he struggles to handle crosses and makes consistent bad decisions between the posts.
Green has formed a good relationship with Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson and this setback will quickly go to the back of his mind. Bringing in Silvestri is not the solution for Leeds, sticking by Green is the way to go.
