Noel Whelan has told BBC Sport that Leeds United were too nice to Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Leeds faced Newcastle at Elland Road in the Championship on Sunday afternoon. Shelvey featured in the game for the Magpies and played for the entire 90 minutes.

The former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder had a good game and helped Rafael Benitez’s side win 2-0.

Former Leeds striker Whelan was following the match, and he stated that the Garry Monk’s players were too nice to Shelvey.

“I think we've been too nice to Shelvey, let him have too much time on the ball,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “We’ve only really rattled him in a tackle once.”

Over the course of the 90 minutes at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, hosts Leeds had 52% of the possession, took 12 shots of which four were on target, and earned 10 corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Newcastle had 48% of the possession, took 10 shots of which five were on target, and earned six corners, according to BBC Sport.

The Magpies are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 40 points from 17 matches.

Leeds are currently seventh in the standings with 26 points from 17 games, just a point behind sixth-placed Norwich City.
